Pilot Manual 42

Approximate Period 1910 - 1945

In the early 20th century aviator watches were developed for the needs of pilots who would have worn them mainly during the two world wars as a technical resource on the outside of their leather jacket. Aviation was one of the most advanced engineering and pioneering fields at the time so there was much competion between compaines to produce the best pilot watch. Features for a pilot's watch include the large size, a larger crown, simple design, robust construction and especially good readability. In most cases, the watch does not have a logo or a date. Since manual wind movements mainly had a small second hand, the movements were rebuilt to incorperate a large central seconds hand. The seconds hand plays a huge role in aviation and with a large center seconds it's easier just to tell the time in seconds with one quick glance. It should still be possible to read at later night, therefore we opted to use Luminova on the dials and hands. Another distinguishing feature of a pilot watches is the triangle at the 12 clock position. The crown was usually very large and rough, so you could wind the crown even when wearing gloves. In Germany two dial variants have prevailed: the type A and type B. The type A is designed to be very simple and has luminous numbers, a minute track, and the triangle at the 12 clock.  The type B displays of the hours in the inner circle and the minutes are indicated on the outer circle. This makes dial B more costly.

It is in this tradition Tourby offers its range of pilot watches.  We produce two models, the pilot (model A design) and the Navigator (model B design). Each version are available with small second hand or with the movement modification for the center seconds. There is a huge selection of different straps we offer the customer and this creates the possibility to change the look of your timepiece. The watches are all in 42mm and have a sapphire crystal. The sapphire crystal is domed and anti-reflective coating on the inside surface. The hight varies from 10.5 mm glass bottom up to 12.6 mm with steel caseback. Superluminova C1 or C3 offer excellent readability in the dark. All details are the same price. The prices differ only in the degree of movement decorations.

All Pilot models have blued steel hands included. The Aviator and Navigator models come with simple black hands.
