Pilot Manual 40

Approximate Period 1910 - 1945

Available in three sizes - 40 mm, 43 mm or 45 mm

In the early 20th century aviator watches were developed for the needs of pilots who would have worn them mainly during the two world wars as a technical resource on the outside of their leather jacket. Aviation was one of the most advanced engineering and pioneering fields at the time so there was much competion between compaines to produce the best pilot watch. Features for a pilot's watch include the large size, a larger crown, simple design, robust construction and especially good readability. In most cases, the watch does not have a logo or a date. Since manual wind movements mainly had a small second hand, the movements were rebuilt to incorperate a large central seconds hand. The seconds hand plays a huge role in aviation and with a large center seconds it's easier just to tell the time in seconds with one quick glance. It should still be possible to read at later night, therefore we opted to use Luminova on the dials and hands. Another distinguishing feature of a pilot watches is the triangle at the 12 clock position. The crown was usually very large and rough, so you could wind the crown even when wearing gloves. In Germany two dial variants have prevailed: the type A and type B. The type A is designed to be very simple and has luminous numbers, a minute track, and the triangle at the 12 clock.
